Our Story
The Family Behind the Businesses
Spencer Companies is a family-owned group of businesses based in Sioux Falls, SD, serving the communities we call home since 1987, from construction site solutions to places where memories are made.
Spencer Companies traces its roots back to 1987, when Alan and Judy Spencer started building what would become a family business spanning the Midwest. In the early years, they lived in and managed a mobile home community owned by Judy’s father, Carl. They didn’t run that first community from an office across town. They were a part of the community, and that’s shaped the Spencer Companies values ever since.
That same year, they formed CAJ Enterprises, the company’s original operating entity. What began as a small family operation grew steadily into a group of businesses that included Parks Limited, Meadow Vista, Country View, Dakotaland Homes, New Prairie RVs, New Prairie Storage, KOA campgrounds, New Prairie Leasing, and other real estate and operating ventures throughout the Midwest.
Over the years, the work expanded into manufactured housing communities, RV dealerships, self-storage, lodging, commercial real estate, land development, leasing, and investment properties. The work changed. The approach didn’t: take care of relationships, keep your word, and grow at a pace you can stand behind.
None of it happened alone. The employees, managers, and partners who showed up year after year built this company as much as the family did.
In 2013, the next generation joined the business when Alan and Judy’s son Alan Spencer, “Hoover,” became actively involved in the company. Today, the company is making the transition from CAJ Enterprises to Spencer Companies, a name that better reflects the family behind it and the group of businesses built over nearly four decades. The name is changing. The way we do business isn’t.
